About the project
Location: Normandy Park, WA
Services: Whole Home Renovation
Style: Mid-Century Modern
Originally renovated by Deane Home Services in 2022, this Normandy Park home was reimagined once again in 2024 to reflect the needs and lifestyle of its new owners. After relocating from Nebraska to retire in the Seattle area, the homeowners were referred back to Deane Home Services to thoughtfully update the space while preserving the home’s character and views.
Designed for serious home cooks, the kitchen received a major functional upgrade. The original 30” induction cooktop was replaced with a 36” gas range and a 42” high-performance hood with 1,400 CFM capacity, complete with a Make-Up Air System. To seamlessly integrate the larger appliances, we reworked the surrounding cabinetry. By partnering with Seahurst Cabinetry and Design, we were able to precisely match the existing cabinets from the earlier renovation, ensuring the updates felt original to the home rather than an afterthought.
To further enhance flow and maximize natural beauty, a section of wall between the kitchen and dining room landing was removed. This transformation opened up the space and created uninterrupted sightlines to Puget Sound and Vashon Island. Outdated oak cabinetry from a 1970s addition was removed and replaced with matching custom cabinetry, visually uniting the kitchen and dining areas into one cohesive, light-filled space.
The kitchen bump-out was also completely reworked. A garden-style window system from a previous renovation clashed with the home’s mid-century modern aesthetic and suffered from poor insulation and water intrusion. We removed the existing window assembly, extended the roofline to match the original architecture, and rebuilt the walls. The new design features a large central picture window flanked by smaller windows, along with a north-facing casement window that brings in fresh air while framing the surrounding landscape.
Throughout the home, the original 1950s oak flooring was replaced with a lighter maple floor to brighten the interior and modernize the space. To subtly reflect the movement of Puget Sound, select pieces of Birdseye Maple were incorporated, with their natural figuring evoking the water’s currents and whitecaps. Because portions of the home required engineered flooring over concrete, sourcing perfectly matched maple and Birdseye maple presented a challenge. Lane Hardwood Flooring exceeded expectations by coordinating custom fabrication to ensure a flawless result.
Finishing details were equally intentional. Baseboards and millwork were unified throughout the home, eliminating mismatched profiles and finishes. Oak wall caps and handrails from a past remodel were replaced with pre-stained Douglas Fir to complement the existing trim. Custom copper handrails, fabricated by Master Fab, were installed on both staircases and along the kitchen landing, where wall heights were raised to meet modern code requirements while adding a refined, custom touch.
Exterior updates completed the transformation, including new siding at the kitchen bump-out and repairs to areas affected by water damage. The result is a cohesive, thoughtfully updated home that blends craftsmanship, function, and timeless Northwest design—perfectly suited for retirement living overlooking Puget Sound.
